From Taiwan’s natural and cultural beauty we searched for its colors.
A joyful and fulfilling “Taiwan Red” represents blessings, celebration, and auspiciousness, symbolizing the happy and vibrant human life of the Taiwanese people!
A natural and youthful “Taiwan Green” is the color of Taiwan’s green mountains and clear waters, also symbolizing the passion and bravery of its islanders!
A heaven-revering and prosperous “Taiwan Gold” is the color of the earth’s bountiful harvest, and also represents faith and hope.
Taiwan Gender Equality Week (TGEW)
The 69th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) was held in New York from March 10-21, 2025. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), in continued collaboration with Taiwanese non-governmental organizations, arranged for Taiwan Gender Equality Week (TGEW) to be held in New York City. CSW69 focused on gender equality and Platform for Action adopted by the Fourth World Conference on Women. In line with this, TGEW’s 2025 theme was “Resilient Leadership & Free Expression,” demonstrating Taiwan’s long-standing efforts to promote gender mainstreaming and gender equality.
Taiwan Women’s Power and Culture Night
A highlight of TGEW 2025 was the Taiwan Women’s Power and Culture Night, held at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York on March 12, 2025. The main event, themed “Taiwan Main Stage: Celebrating Women’s Resilience and Progress,” showcased Taiwan’s gender equality achievements. Distinguished guests, including former Taiwan President Ing-Wen Tsai, Taiwan Ambassador Chih-Chiang Lee, Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla of Eswatini, former U.S. Ambassador-at-Large Kelley Currie, Taiwan’s Ambassador-at-Large Po-Chun Liu, and Chairwoman Chia-Hui Lu, shared their perspectives on Taiwan’s gender mainstreaming and international commitments.

- SUNFLOWER – Rondo for the Celestials:
A surreal experience of dreams reminisced. It featured the birth of existence, the fight for freedom, and the enduring power of eternal hope where light blossoms from darkness.
Inspired by news of an elderly woman in the Eastern European war zone, who placed seeds in the pockets of invading soldiers, telling them when they fall in battle, their bodies will fertilize the soil from which sunflowers will bloom. Her bravery prompts a Taiwanese pianist, Chia-Hui Lu, to reflect and compose a rondo in memory of her late father Hsiu-Yi Lu, a fighter for democracy. She longs for dialogue with the heavens through her cyclical five-part rondo, seeking response, while inadvertently unearthing her own long-buried traumatic memories. The surreal visuals resonate and perpetually renews around the rondo, transforming relics and spiritual legacies into seeds of hope. The audience witnesses the faith of unwavering souls that will never surrender to darkness.
The values of peace, love, and hope were highlighted, showcasing issues of resilience in the face of suppression and inequality. - BUTTERFLY ORCHID – Trapped by Emotions and Transformed for Love:
Featuring Taiwanese endemic flowers and butterflies that beautifully capture the intersection of art and women’s transformation, devotion, transcendent rebirth, and free spirit.
Upon visiting the Botanical Garden at Tainan, Chia-Hui Lu was drawn to the Psychopsis Kalihi Orchid. Nicknamed the “Devil Orchid”, it is quite enchanting in its resemblance of a butterfly and a dancer. After her visit, Chia-Hui had a vivid touching dream that she felt compelled to create. This fantasy begins with a botanist rescuing a captured butterfly. Showing immense gratitude, the butterfly transforms into a woman but fails to receive his love. Ultimately, she morphs into a new species of orchids to the ecstatic delight of the botanist and was hailed as the Queen of Orchids. As the flower fades, it transcends earthly bounds, joining the constellation in the night sky, at last fulfilling the heart’s desire.
The work is dedicated to Professor Yu-Chiou Tchen, Chia-Hui’s mother, who has transformed many times in devotion to love, family, and country.

Taiwan’s essence pulsed through the artworks, crafted with motion capture, 3D modeling, dynamic algorithms, and biomimetics. A proprietary real-time live music recognition system seamlessly synchronizes the visual storytelling with the piano performance, inviting the audience to spread their wings of imagination and indulge in a truly surreal cross-art experience
Light the Flame, Ignite Hope
Through our candle vigil, we gather strength. We hope the candles offer light and hope in times of darkness. May we all become messengers of light, working together to illuminate the world! The values of peace, love, and hope were highlighted, showcasing resilience in environmental, ethnicity, and peace. After the immersive performance, guests received a “Box of Hope” (an electric candle symbolizing hope), and participated in a silent prayer for world peace, health, and safety.

Evolving Gender Equality Exhibition
Curated by Chia-Hui Lu, the “Taiwan Women’s Power Exhibition” highlighted the historical progress of gender mainstreaming in Taiwan, showcasing women’s strength and pursuit of equality from the 1980s to present. Women are like butterflies, they experience metamorphosis and fly away beautifully. Taiwan is known as the kingdom of butterflies and butterflies are the centerpiece of this segment’s collaborative art installation. International guests contributed to a butterfly collage in the shape of Taiwan, symbolizing freedom, diversity, creative expression, and Taiwan’s resilience and ever-evolving identity.
Island of Hope
Taiwan is home to over 400 species of butterflies, making them a perfect symbol for the island’s inclusive spirit and its respect for diverse ethnicities, genders, and cultures. Moreover, in turbulent times, we hope to deepen our collective cohesion through collaborative creation.
We invite guests to write their wishes for the future and the world on cut out butterflies of various species, sizes, and colors. These butterflies are placed on a hanging scroll depicting the island of Taiwan. Through these butterflies, may the participants’ aspirations soar high and come true! The collaborative “Island of Hope” becomes a memorable meaningful artwork of the event.
The Butterfly Kingdom and Female Transformation
Taiwan is known as the “Butterfly Kingdom,” and butterfly is our central theme. Like the butterfly, women embody strength in vulnerability, undergoing profound transformations or metamorphosis as they evolve and grow.
“Taiwan’s Rich Colors” serve as a powerful symbol of the island’s vibrancy, diversity, multifaceted character, and continuous progress.

International Support and Collaboration
President Ing-Wen Tsai reported on Taiwan’s significant advancements in gender equality over the past decades. In 2024, Taiwan’s female parliamentarians exceeded 40%, ranking first in Asia. The 2023 OECD Social Institutions and Gender Index (SIGI) ranked Taiwan sixth globally and first in Asia. Taiwan was also the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. Despite exclusion from major international organizations, Taiwan remains dedicated to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. She reiterated that when talent is not differentiated by gender, the entire nation and government benefit. Ambassador Tom Chih-Chiang Lee underscored Taiwan’s commitment to women’s empowerment and gender equality as a fundamental human right, pledging continued efforts with global partners. Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla of Eswatini highlighted Taiwan’s support for women’s rights in Eswatini including funding a revolving credit for 450 women’s micro-enterprises, providing skills training for over 6,000 local women to start businesses and offering higher education scholarships. Former U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues, Kelley Currie, expressed hope that Taiwan and the U.S. will continue cooperative projects to promote women’s empowerment, adding that the U.N. should pay attention to Taiwan’s leading position in the field and raise the country’s profile in international organizations. Ambassador-at-Large Po-Chun Liu emphasized shared U.S.-Taiwan values and ongoing international contributions. Egret Chairwoman’s “HOPE” Immersive Performance and Exhibits showcases Taiwan’s values of peace and love; aiming to inspire everyone to become a messenger of hope through the power of art and music. She believes she has the responsibility to use her work to contribute to positive change in environmental protection, cultural inclusion and to encourage all to strive for a better future, and to never, ever give up.
